Crash in Katyn-Polish president and goverment officials dead

70 years ago, in a forest in Katyn, the Soviet military executed thousands of polish officers and university professors captured during the attack on Poland in World War II. Shot in the back of their heads, they were burred in mass graves, uncovered years later by the withdrawing from the Soviet Union Nazi soldiers. Russia admired that it was their military only 20 years ago, blaming it previously on the Germans.

Today, Polish government officials, our president, many high government officials [head of National Polish Bank, Polish Human Right Minister, head of Polish Institute of National Memory...] , the head of the Polish Army as well as many of unit commanders [head of Polish Navy, head of Polish Special Forces...], the last Polish Aboard President [the government that escaped Poland during WWII never accepted the Soviet-created one, until 1990], a total of 88 people died in the government plane crash, when approaching their destinate airport. They were on their way to pay their respects to the victims of the Katyn massacre. This was supposed to be a special occasion, not only a full 70 years later, but also the first one, that a high Russian government official [Wladymir Putin] did attend and acknowledge.

Absolutely crazy, the timing and the context... it really beggars belief. Was drinking my homebrew with some old friends when I heard the news. I thought it was a potent drink at first. But, such is life.
